Creating a LEAN Manufacturing Department

I am creating a visual process board to detail what a process would like from inception to completion of the product flow.

Doing this allows me to really think through what it would be like starting from sales receiving a request for a quote on a security solution, to accounting processing credit, to operations understanding the scope of work, creating a bill of material, procurement ordering parts

Translate the visual process into excel to make the data more easily workable.

In addition, I can break down the process into bite size instructions for the various department roles and write the procedures and training material.

I can now use the power of excel to run some budgetary numbers to plan the cost of the project to present it to the Executives.

Now we start to sort out all the stuff that is in our space into piles. We sort out what we will keep, sell, give away, or throw out things we do not need.

Sort (Seiri): Eliminate unnecessary items from the workspace.

We document everything and take a lot of photos so we can look back on this once we are completed.

Now we start to set things into order and into place. Before I can do that, I actually have to prepare the floor. with a special epoxy that will make spills easier to clean and give a nice shine to the existing cement floor. and allow labelling of floors to last a very long time.

Set in Order (Seiton): Organize and arrange necessary items for easy access.

Label floors to ensure there are clear instructions for flow.

Placing equipment where needed for staging parts.

I designed this A-frame to hold up to 4x units at a time.

This allowed our technicians to work on the equipment without straining their backs.

Additionally, allowing technicians to  program and test multiple units at the same time.

Finally, it allowed the technician to simply roll the equipment from the different stages of assembly throughout the shop and out to the installing vehicle when ready for

Shine (Seiso): Clean the workspace and inspect for issues.

Designated staging shelves that can shrink and expand on a track and keeps projects, documents and ownership in one place that will not be lost.

Standardize (Seiketsu): Establish standards for processes and organization.

Creating a LEAN Manufacturing Department

These are a collection of documents and images that are a part of the development, design and work that went into building the Manufacturing Department. While creating this department, I was hiring new staff, while training existing staff on LEAN methodologies. The goal was to get buy-in at the same time, creating a culture of LEAN thinking employees that would contribute to continuous improvement initiatives company wide.
